About us

Up Learn is an online education platform. We use AI and neuroscience to help A Level students achieve A* results. Up Learn detects each student’s strengths and weaknesses to construct a personalised learning experience. Interactive videos build knowledge and understanding, whilst quizzes, exam questions and spaced repetition intervals promote retention and application of this knowledge. Each course is subject and exam board specific. Up Learn is a scalable, personalised, learning experience that is so effective we guarantee A*-A results.
1) Students using Up Learn no longer need offline classes, textbooks, past papers, notes or tutors to prepare for exams. All they need is Up Learn - it's a complete solution.
2) We use universal principles from neuroscience and cognitive science on how humans learn most effectively, such as active elaboration and spaced repetition - rather than just counterproductive intuitions of what 'feels' right.
3) Our learning system is so effective that we guarantee A*-A results. No other solution, be it tutor or textbook, guarantees an A*-A.
Currently we offer courses for A Level Economics, Physics and Maths. We're developing courses for more exam boards in these subjects, and many more subjects. All other subjects may not be available for at least another year.
This will vary from subject to subject. We aim to offer the 3 main UK exam boards: AQA, Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR. We also sometimes support WJEC, CCEA, CIE and IB.
We're still very new and developing a lot of our courses. Whilst we have run successful courses in Economics and Physics, all our other subjects are new. We are sorry for the wait and hopefully will finish the courses in time for use for your exams! Please feel free to press the green button in the bottom right and ask us when the course you're looking for will be ready. To get A*-A results you need to start using Up Learn 8 or more weeks before your exam - so you still might have time!
We use more than 200 different techniques from existing and our own research in cognitive science. A small sample of these are: Spaced repetition, retrieval practice, interleaved learning, active elaboration and desirable difficulties. You can read about these and more in our Research Summary, though this is only a small sample of the cognitive science we use in practice.

Up Learn uses adaptive learning to personalise the learning experience for each and every student. At Up Learn, our adaptive learning means providing Adaptive Sequence, Adaptive Assessment and Adaptive Content.

Our algorithms start working their magic by observing patterns in your learning from the moment you sign up. We adapt the sequence at which you progress through the course based on your current strengths and weaknesses, so that we make the biggest improvements to your grades first. We designed Up Learn to stretch your abilities, so the material will always challenge you. However, we use adaptive sequencing to make sure that it isn’t ridiculously beyond the level you’re at - because that’d just be a waste of time! With Up Learn, you’ll always be pushed to improve (in a good way!) but you won’t be shown anything that you won’t be able to understand.

Finally, we use adaptive assessments (exam practice sessions) to give you practice on the areas you need to improve at most. And we use adaptive content to give you personalised feedback to quiz questions.

How it works

Every student is guaranteed A*-A results - or your money back - regardless of your background or starting point. For more information about our guarantee, click here.
At school, I (Guy - Up Learn Founder) was always pretty average. When I started AS levels, I caught glandular fever and fell very far behind.

Determined not to drop back, I read research on how to learn faster and better. Then, once I was feeling better, I stayed home to apply these techniques in a bid to catch up. Upon returning to school, I skyrocketed to top of my class in Chemistry, Maths and Physics despite having missed all my lessons. My teachers were stunned.

The secret to my success, and why some students get A*s, whilst others get Cs and Ds, has not been being 'naturally smart', or what I've learnt - it's been how.

Yet, despite the existence of effective learning techniques, only the very top students have been able to use them. I founded Up Learn to make these techniques accessible to all and create the world's most effective learning experience.

Minimal time and effort
  • Video Lessons: teaching all topics on the specification of that subject and exam board.
  • Quiz-check Questions: presented at the beginning of a video lesson, to test whether you already know the material covered in the lesson or not.
  • Video Quizzes: built into the video lessons to make the lesson experience interactive.
  • Exam how-tos: a comprehensive set of video lessons covering exam technique relevant to the subject specification and exam board. The structure of these will vary; some present general frameworks and information while others go through example exam questions with model answers.
  • Definitions, equations and memorable statements: covering the entire specification. Definitions are initially delivered to you through memorisation sessions which are later followed by recall sessions.
  • Progress Quizzes: short quiz questions covering the entire specification and make for quick-fire knowledge practice.
  • ‘Formative’ and ‘Adaptive’ Exam Practice Papers: formatted to match the subject specification and exam board in both style and content (i.e. it will look exactly the same and the length, structure, topics, difficulty and style of questions is exactly the same).
    • Formative: exam questions and mark schemes are created and fit into pre-set ‘formative’ exam papers. These are given to you at certain intervals and aim to replicate the exam you could be given on exam day. These are used to assess and predict the grade you're at.
    • Adaptive: exam paper is created automatically when you request an exam practice. This is based on the topics identified as your weaker areas, where you need to practice most.
Yes, you can study as many courses as you like. It is feasible to take up to 8 courses simultaneously. It just depends how motivated you are!
A Levels are taught over 2 years. We offer courses for Year 12 students and courses for Year 13 students in each subject. The courses are divided by themes, e.g. Economics is divided into Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.

Year 12 courses prepare you for AS or roughly half of the A Level. Year 13 courses contain everything you need for your final A Level exams (including all the material covered in Year 12).

If you are in Year 13, in your enrolment you will receive access to all Year 12 and Year 13 courses for your subject.
If you’re using Up Learn regularly, we recommend you use it for 8-12 weeks. You should continue to use Up Learn until your overall score is 90-100%. Once you reach that point (and sometimes even before), you are on track for an A*. However, you will have to keep using Up Learn to maintain the score (it will start going down if you neglect your learning)!
Our algorithm (known as Up Intelligence) is continuously evaluating your learning level (intelligence) in every topic within the course you are taking. How it does it? That's top secret I'm afraid. But we're very proud of how accurately it measures and predicts your level. It crunches huge amounts of data into a very easy to understand score out of 10, displayed by the colourful progress bars on your Up Learn course.
When doing a lesson, the easiest way to give us feedback is to press the Flag button. At all other times, you can press the green chat button in the bottom right corner. We are always keen to hear from you, whether you're sharing good or bad news!
